KURINUKI

Kurinuki is a traditional Japanese hand-building technique whose exact origins are not clearly documented. Its name comes from the Japanese verb kurinuku, meaning to hollow out. Rather than building a vessel by adding clay, I begin with a solid block and slowly carves away the material to reveal the space within. In my practice, I listen with my hands and remove what is no longer needed until the vessel begins to emerge. I preserve the tool marks, uneven edges and small imperfections, traces of a process in which I never fully determine the outcome but allow the clay to answer back

Kurinuki ceramics carved slowly from a solid block of clay

Kurinuki is a traditional Japanese hand-building technique in which a solid block of clay is gradually carved, shaped and hollowed out. Rather than forcing the clay towards a predetermined form, I work slowly and listen to the material — removing what is no longer needed until the object begins to emerge.

Each Kurinuki piece is made by hand in my studio in Gentofte, Denmark. The carving leaves visible traces, irregular edges and tactile surfaces, making every cup, chawan, guinomi, vessel and urn entirely unique.

Rooted in Japanese aesthetics and wabi-sabi, these objects embrace imperfection, impermanence and the quiet beauty of the handmade. Some are fired in an electric kiln, while others are transformed through

Anagama, wood firing or soda firing, allowing flame, ash and atmosphere to become part of the final expression.
