NORTHERN LIGHTS

A kurinuki tea cup, carved from black clay and fired in an anagama kiln.

The tea cup begins as a solid block of clay, slowly cut, carved and hollowed by hand. The marks of the process remain visible in the rugged surface — cuts, cracks and shifting planes that give the piece an almost geological presence.

During the long anagama firing, flame, ash and atmosphere became part of the making. Deep charcoal and graphite tones are interrupted by subtle earthy nuances and small flashes of green, appearing almost unexpectedly across the dark surface.

Those traces of green gave the cup its name: Northern Lights like a faint aurora moving across a dark night sky.

Raw, tactile and deliberately imperfect, the cup carries the meeting between my hands and the unpredictability of fire.

A functional object, yet also a small landscape shaped by clay, flame, ash and time.
