TRACES No. 4

Each plate is pinched and gently beaten into shape by hand, preserving the raw, irregular edge and the marks left by the making process.

The plates were stacked inside an anagama kiln with seashells placed between them to keep them apart during the soda firing. In the intense heat, the shells burned away, leaving their imprints in the clay.

Flame, soda, ash and atmosphere created the layered surfaces, moving between charcoal, rust, blue-grey and warm earthy tones.

No two plates emerged alike. Each one carries its own record of fire, pressure and chance.
